Plaza East Condominiums FRP Anchor Reinforcement
Location: Ft. Lauderdale, FL
Owner: Plaza East Condo Association
Specialty Contractor: STRUCTURAL
Plaza East Condominiums corroded and defectively reinforced oceanfront balconies were restored using corrosion-resistant CSS V-Wrap™ FRP strengthening and concrete repairs, ensuring long-term structural safety with minimal disruption for residents.
PROJECT DETAILS
The 21-story Plaza East Condominiums features 16 floors of oceanfront balconies. Extreme weather and insufficient waterproofing corroded the balcony edges.
An inspection also revealed a construction defect —the reinforcing steel for the balcony slab edges had been omitted during initial construction. To address this and reinforce the balconies, Tstrata developed a repair solution using CSS V-Wrap™, a high-strength Carbon FRP reinforcement. FRP reinforcement is corrosion resistant and offers the flexibility to implement repairs economically, with minimal disruption to building occupants. The performance of the FRP solution was verified through full scale laboratory testing carried out at the Tstrata research center.
STRUCTURAL, an exclusive licensee of Tstrata, executed the concrete repairs and reinforcement of the balconies, installed the CSS V-Wrap™, and applied an acrylic topcoat system. Swing stages and aerial platforms were used to safely and efficiently complete the repairs.
This restoration ensures that the Plaza East Condominiums can continue to provide safe and reliable living for its Fort Lauderdale residents.
